The Pride have something to be justifiably proud of.
The Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association was selected as the large association of the year, and given the honour at the Softball BC annual general meeting and awards night.
“Softball BC is really excited to introduce this new award recognizing the work that associations and clubs do to promote and develop softball around the province,” said the announcement.
“This award is designed to acknowledge and reward the dedication and commitment necessary to operate a top level softball club at the highest level on an ongoing basis.”
Association president Rob Hartford said it is an honour to be the first to take home the award.
“It says a lot for all of our volunteers,” said Hartford, noting it is one of the few associations that is still operated solely by the efforts of volunteers.
One of those tireless workers for the association was honoured during the AGM, as Sally Clayton was given the Minor Service Award for the province.
Clayton has been volunteering in RMMSA for 31 year, and currently holds the position of treasurer. Past president Tom Bowen, the association publicity manager, said Clayton has done every job in Ridge Meadows minor softball over her three decades of service.
The standard answer to just about every question that comes up is “ask Sally,” he said. “It’s a long overdue award.”
“She has been the unofficial president for years,” said Hartford.
Ridge Meadows won for association MVP award in the large category, which is more than 150 players. The local association is always one of the largest in B.C., with up to 900 players. It hosts tournaments and provincial championships each year.
The association received both a banner and plaque marking them as the association of the year, a $1,000 credit toward equipment and uniforms, and one coach or player development clinic courtesy of MVP Athletics Supplies.
