Ridge Meadows RCMP are alerting citizens to a recent phone scam mainly targeting senior citizens.

Several people have received phone calls from a male claiming to be a police officer who is assisting Revenue Canada. The caller claims the victim owes back taxes and needs to forward a large sum of money immediately or face an even higher penalty.

“In one case, the victim’s money was found to have been sent to Phoenix, Arizona,” said Insp. Dan Splinter. “Police want to advise all citizens to be cautiously suspicious of persons claiming to act for CRA, especially when money is being demanded. When in doubt, get as much detail as you can from the caller and phone the police.”

It appears that the scammers are mainly targeting senior citizens, police said.
