Langley officials tasked with monitoring dikes breathed a bit of a sigh of relief as the Fraser River leveled off over the long weekend.
“We’re still on alert,” said Roeland Zwaag, Langley Township’s director of public works.
The Fraser River has peaked at about 6.0 metres on the Mission gauge. That’s well below 6.4 it reached in 2012.
“Which means no road closures, which is good,” said Zwaag.
Water levels are high enough that a number of trails around Fort Langley and Derby Reach have been closed, because they are submerged.
Local officials are still monitoring the three dikes in Langley on a daily basis and making sure any maintenance is done, but so far there are no major issues.
Right now, the river forecast is for water to remain at about 5.8 to 6.0 metres.
“This level could hold steady for the rest of the week,” Zwaag said.
But there is still a possibility levels could rise again.
“There’s a bit of uncertainty,” said Zwaag.
There is rain forecast for the next weekend in the Interior. How much remains unknown, said Zwaag.
Previously, in 2007 and 2012 there were concerns over high water, with flood plans put in place.
