A late-night tour of Falkland turned interesting for a Lower Mainland family Tuesday.
Police received a call at 10:45 p.m. from a 46-year-old man from Port Coquitlam who reported he had been in a single-vehicle accident near Highway 97, and that he, his wife and child were trapped in the car.
“Fire crews and emergency services personnel were called out, but when police arrived, the three of them were sitting in a fire truck keeping warm,” said V RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
The driver stated that he and his family were staying in Falkland and that he took the family out for a ride around Falkland.
While travelling along Chase-Falkand Road, the driver discovered the roads were in bad condition, so turned around to head back to Falkland. He then lost control of his vehicle and slid into the ditch.
The roads were slippery due to wet snow conditions.
Road conditions may have played a factor in an accident five hours earlier one kilometre north of Falkland on Highway 97.
A 22-year-old man, believed to be from Kamloops, was driving a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire northbound when he lost control on a curve and slid sideways across the oncoming lane.
The vehicle was struck by a semi truck on the passenger side near the rear corner.
Both airbags deployed.
The driver and his 18-year-old female passenger from Fort St. John were wearing seatbelts and were not seriously injured, although they did complain of sore necks and shoulders.
The car suffered extensive damage.
The Sunfire’s driver was issued a ticket for failing to remain right.
