Road to Shames open

There's skiing today on Shames Mountain now that the road is open

CLOSED BECAUSE of a high avalanche hazard, the road to the Shames Mountain ski facility is open again.

The closure affected two days of skiing, Monday and Tuesday, on the mountain due to a combination of heavy snowfall and warming weather conditions.

Hwy16 west of Terrace was close altogether and is now open but to single lane alternating traffic about 55km west of Terrace.

That’s because there’s snow on the highway.

“For those wondering, the closure was done because of high avalanche danger, and an avalanche did come down all the way to our road,” reports Shames general manager Christian Theberge on the My Mountain Co-op Facebook page.

Theberge says conditions are excellent for skiing today.

“Snow on top of the mountain is waist deep and dry,” he reports.

Meanwhile, driving continues to be tricky on area roads.

Reports are either of slippery sections or water pooling on roads throughout the area.
