Although organizers were expecting a full-house of 100 people, mirroring last year’s capacity crowd, this year’s Robbie Burns Dinner and Auction has been cancelled.

There just aren’t enough volunteers stepping forward, one of the event’s key organizers Norma Winner said.

“There’s a lot of things to do, with few volunteers,” she said.

Winner was one of only two people to come forwarded, interested in helping out with the event.

“We need a lot of people we can count on,” she said, adding that people’s tendency is to offer their help down the road, and then not follow through.

The Youbou/Meade Creek-based volunteer group, Me N’ You Nites Social Association, was the organizing body behind the dinner/auction.

“We’re a small group to start with, and we’re dropping,” Winner said.

Without more volunteers, future Me N’ You Nites Social Association-organized events may have to be cancelled, as well.

Upcoming events include a February 12 dance, a March 26 talent show, a May 28 International Dinner, and Canada Day Celebrations at Arbutus Park. Those wanting to help in organizing these events, and therefore ensuring that they take place, can call Winner at 745-6201.
