Roed speaks at agm

Kelowna geologist and painter Murray Roed will be guest speaker at this week’s 48th annual general meeting of the Okanagan Similkameen Parks Society.
He will talk about Ancient Okanagan and Amazing New Discoveries, about the geological origins of the Okanagan Valley and the Okanagan fault, bedrock carved nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon of Arizona; and strange patterns on Okanagan Lake’s bottom.
Roed has been part of a multi-disciplinary study of a very old glacial deposit that proved a million-year-old regional glaciation had enveloped the Okanagan and other parts of B.C. and the Yukon.
As well, he has collaborated with Gene and Sandy Ralston and their side scanning sonar system to reveal unusual bottom features of the lake that are difficult to explain.
He is author or co-author of six books, including Okanagan Geology and Okanagan Geology South.
The meeting and presentation will be held at 7 p.m., Fri., Apr. 5 in the Centre Stage Theatre in the Summerland Secondary School on Main Street.
Admission is free but donations are welcome.
The group’s financial report, election of directors and other discussions are also on the agenda.
One of Roed’s paintings called Summerland Cannonballs, depicting this intriguing rock formation embedded in lava near Summerland, will be auctioned off at the agm, with half the proceeds going to the parks society.
The aim of the OSPS is to work for the acquisition and preservation of parkland for health, recreation, education and natural enjoyment of the public.
Past successes include creation of Cathedral Provincial Park, Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park and Conkle Lake Provincial Park.
