Rossland 2020 annual report ready for review

Report gives a close look at city operations, priorities, financials, and asset management

The city is inviting residents to take a close look at the recently released 2020 City of Rossland Annual Report, and bring any questions to council.

The year 2020 has been different and at times more difficult than any other, with the COVID-19 pandemic’s adverse impact on businesses, organizations, municipalities, and individuals’ mental health.

“We are proud of how well city staff addressed the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic,” read council’s message in the report. “New policies, procedures and quick actions were required as circumstances constantly changed and more restrictions were announced by other levels of government.

“Despite these challenges, the city continued to provide all of the essential services for the community, while simultaneously, prioritizing community safety.”

The report includes a breakdown of the various city services, council’s strategic initiatives and the Corporate Management Plan.

In addition, the report contains the 2020 audited annual financial statements; a listing of the permissive and revitalization tax exemptions granted and the amount of property taxes that would have been imposed on the property if it were not exempt for 2020; a statement of objectives and measures for 2020 and a progress report on the previous year’s objectives.

“I love it, it’s fabulous,” said Coun. Janice Nightingale at Jun. 21 council meeting.

“It’s another spectacular piece of work and I think it covers a wide range of what the city does, and what’s been happening in the city. It’s very informative and I wish more people would read it before they came to us to discuss things.”

The report also lays the groundwork for a more optimistic 2021, a new Official Community Plan, asset management and the city’s potential for growth going forward.

“There are many exciting projects ahead and even a pandemic cannot derail the progress and work that Rossland City Council and the hard-working, dedicated city staff are making on behalf of council and the community,” read the report.

In accordance with the Community Charter, council will present the City of Rossland 2020 Annual Report for approval at the regular council meeting on July 12, at 6 p.m. via Zoom webinar.

The report is now available for public inspection at city hall, located at 2196 Leroi Ave., or online at rossland.ca.

“They are so readable now, they’re very user friendly, they’re not intimidating,” said Nightingale.

“It gives such a good overview of what the city is doing and how we’re doing and it’s such a valuable tool to help protect the organization.”

Anyone with questions or comments are encouraged to attend the meeting or submit them in writing by noon on Monday, July 12, to city hall or email dco@rossland.ca.
