The Rotary Club of Oak Bay shone its fundraising focus on the Uplands Park and Cattle Point neighbourhood recently.
The club presented a cheque for $6,000 to Chris Hyde-Lay, Manager of Parks Services in Oak Bay, to support the purchase of bike racks in the Uplands Park area and for a marine kiosk at Cattle Point.
The bike racks are on order and will be installed at Cattle Point and the Midland Road entrance to Uplands Park, Hyde-Lay said.
“We’ve done so much with the park in improving the ecosystems for the rare plants, a lot more people are starting to come to the park,” he said, adding that the district wants to encourage cycling as an option for park visitors.
In the “Window on the Salish Sea” marine kiosk, four panels will describe the local geography, history, oceanography and marine life.
The content and design of the panels are largely being undertaken by oceanographer Chris Garrett, naturalist Jacques Sirois and designer Matthias Reinicke, who hope to complete the project by the fall, Rotary said in a press release.
“With the marine kiosk, we really want to raise the profile of what’s going on with the Salish Sea,” Hyde-Lay said.
The kiosk will complement five signs that will also be installed highlighting the region’s place as a bird sanctuary.
Thanking Rotary for their contribution to the initiative, “I would say it would not have happened without their support,” Hyde-Lay said.
