TERRACE and area Rotary clubs nearing splash park project goal.

Rotary clubs close in on Terrace, B.C. splash park goal

The goal is to finish the project by the May long weekend

RESIDENTS are expected to have a splash park to cool off in this summer at George Little Park as the local Rotary clubs come down to their final stretch in making it a reality.

And council agreed at its Feb. 15 meeting to write a letter of support to help the two local Rotary clubs apply to various agencies for the remaining money they need.

Rich Toomey, representing the Rotary Club of Terrace and the Terrace-Skeena Valley Rotary Club, told council they been raising money for the better part of three years now and most has been arranged with additional help through in-kind donations.

“We’re still a bit short so we still do fundraising,” said Toomey, adding the clubs were looking for the letter of support from council.

In reply to mayor Carol Leclerc’s question about the amount of money still needed, Toomey said it was a hard number to pin down because they were still waiting to hear back from places where they had applied.

The clubs have about $20,000 to put toward installation but until the clubs receive a list of components, the exact amount needed won’t be known, said Toomey.

“Anything over and above the actual costs will be put into extra for the park,” said Toomey, explaining that “plug and play” parts would be put in the park such as another piece of equipment or an upgrade of equipment.

Construction is expected to start in mid-April and it’s hoped it will be done for the May long weekend, said Toomey, adding he believed that was the same time that the city is expected to complete an extension to the playground at the park.

The splash park is to be located adjacent to the playground.
