The busiest road in Vernon has been shut down by a natural gas leak.

Traffic is being rerouted away from 32nd Street (Highway 97) near the Sandman Hotel and the old Waddy’s restaurant. The highway is closed from the Vernon Square mall at 43rd Ave to the 7-Eleven store on 39th Avenue.

“It’s the main route through town so it’s very busy there,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

Crews from Fortis, the Vernon Fire Department and the RCMP are scene.

Molendyk isn’t sure when the highway may reopen to traffic.
