Trevor Russ has been elected vice-president of the Council of the Haida Nation, capturing approximately 40 percent of votes cast in the Dec. 8 election. Mr. Russ has served previously as an Old Massett regional representative on the CHN. He joins new president Peter Lantin, who has been acclaimed to the top spot after rival candidate Robert Mills withdrew from the race. April Churchill, the incumbent vice-president, received 251 votes, while Melinda Pick received 142, Ron Brown Jr. received 79 and Adeana Young received 47. Elected as regional representatives in Old Massett are Kiefer Collison (187 votes), Cynthia Samuels (174), Robert Bennett (160) and Robert (Pedro) Davis (152). Also running in Old Massett but not elected were John Yeltatzie (138), Brandon Kallio (123), Vincent Collison (118), Lawrence Jones (115) and Donnie Edenshaw (61). Elected as regional representatives in Skidegate are Percy Crosby (224), Jason Alsop (195), William Shawn Cowpar (187) and Guujaaw (187). Also running in Skidegate but not elected were Randy Pryce (177) and Juanita (Irene) Mills (98). Elected as regional representatives in Prince Rupert are Pansy Collison (50) and Frank Parnell (49), while in Vancouver, Allan Davidson (50) and Shawn Edenshaw (42) were elected. The newly-elected representatives will be sworn in on Friday, Dec. 14.
