If you’ve never danced in the rain, Ryder Moore thinks you should try it.
And the six-year-old Grade 1 student at Kanaka Creek elementary, with some help from his mom and dad, Sarah and Mike Moore, is collecting rubber boots to make sure other kids can do so.
So far his Ryder’s Rainboots campaign has raised more than $1,300, through gofundme and Facebook pages, to buy rubber boots for families in need.
The goal of the campaign is to raise $2,000 and make the donation through the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries.
Ryder developed the idea for the campaign after driving through the Downtown Eastside with his mom earlier this fall.
It was pouring rain.
“We starting talking about the factors that lead people to live on the streets – a very mature conversation for a six-year-old to have.”
Ryder asked his mother how they could help.
“Everyone needs love, no matter what,” Ryder told his mom.
Ryder was struck by the fact some people didn’t have shoes on and it was raining.
The Ryder’s Rainboots campaign started a couple of weeks later.
“He is a quiet boy with a big heart, and we are so thankful that our community has gathered around to support his idea,” said Ryder’s mother.
The project’s goal, in it’s first year, is to buy 50 pairs of new rain boots, for men, women and children. Ryder plans to include a personalized note for each person receiving the boots.
The campaign has almost reached its goal.
