Locally grown food will soon be more readily available in Saanich, now that Saanich has officially endorsed a local food procurement policy.

Brought forward by the Healthy Saanich advisory committee, the policy was supported by council Monday night, to give priority to local farmers and food producers at municipal gatherings, as well as festivals and events.

Coun. Susan Brice, former chair of Healthy Saanich, said the idea will help Saanich become a role model for residents and other communities.

“We’re a small procurer, but we have a very large role to play … to make a statement,” she said. “It’s more important that we have it.”

Municipal staff will write up a draft policy and send it back to the committee for review.
