Saanich police are looking for a few good men and women to serve their community.
The reserve constable program was recently authorized to hire another 24 members, to add to the existing complement of 26 officers.
“As long as you have the interest and time, we’d love to see you,” said reserve Sgt. Nancy Lane. The volunteer-based program is looking for individuals with an interest in law enforcement, either for the experience or to give back, and who can commit to at least 16 hours a month of service.
Reserve officers are nearly identical to paid officers, save for the fact they aren’t authorized to use a gun or Taser. That’s why the recruitment and training processes are just as strenuous.
Interested reserve recruits must commit to one night a week and Saturdays to train for three months. There are identical physical and written exam requirements, too.
“When you’re done you have a lot riding on you. We don’t take it lightly,” said Lane, who’s been with the reserve program for 13 years.
Reserve officers never work without a regular member nearby.
There are a number of areas reserve officers can work, from bike patrol to working on the police boat.
“It is a big commitment, but it’s a great program,” Lane said.
