Drivers heading out of town for the long weekend are reminded that police will be out in full force making sure motorists stay safe.
This year, Saanich police are using social media to advise drivers of where they’ll be.
“Our objective is to hand out no tickets,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen. “We prefer a situation where we show up somewhere and see no violations. But that isn’t (ever) the case.”
Officers will be posting to www.twitter.com/saanichpolice to let drivers know where they are set up looking for bad driving behaviour. They will also be located elsewhere in the municipality, in locations not publicized.
Police will be enforcing hands-free driving and seat-belt laws, as well as watching for speeders, tailgaters and intoxicated drivers.
“Statistically, there’s a spike in crashes on long weekends and this really does kick off the summer season,” Jantzen said of the Victoria Day weekend.
“If everybody slowed down, put their seat belts on and didn’t drink, we’d have far fewer injuries and crashes this weekend.”
