Saanich police solve ice cream caper

Two Saanich men got themselves in a sticky situation after stealing ice cream Tuesday morning

Two Saanich men got themselves in a sticky situation after stealing ice cream from the joint Tim Hortons/Cold Stone Creamery location in Saanich Plaza Tuesday morning.

Saanich police were called around 1:30 a.m. by a Tim Hortons employee who said two unruly customers grabbed ice cream from a freezer and fled.

Sgt. Dean Jantzen says a patrol officer who responded spotted the two suspect men on nearby Saanich Road, quickly shoving something in their mouths.

“When confronted, both had a difficult time talking with their mouths full and tongues frozen,” Jantzen said in a release. “Given the rapid consumption of ice cream and the likely accompanying brain freeze, neither was able to come up with a suitable response to questions from officers.”

Both men were arrested and searched. The only evidence found was sticky melted ice cream on their hands and faces.

The pair was returned to joint donut-ice cream shop. Jantzen said many tears were shed amid lengthy explanations from the men.

The men, 44 and 39, were released with a future court date. Charges of theft are being considered.
