It’s already popular with kids as ‘the park with a pink elephant,’ and Rutledge Park could be even more popular if it gets a new water park.

Saanich council approved two grant applications on Monday to the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure initiative.

The first is $212,000 to install a splash pad and washroom/changeroom at Rutledge Park with a match of $212,000 drawn from the Saanich parks 2017 budget, for a total of $424,000. The other is for $75,000 to install a new accessibility ramp, with $75,000 drawn from Saanich parks and recreation 2016 budget for a total of $150,000.

The federal 150 Community Infrastructure grant program opened for applications on May 24 and closes on June 22, and can provide up to $500,000 and represent no more than 50 per cent of the project cost for recreational facility upgrades such as local arenas, gyms, swimming pools, sports fields and more. The projects must be complete by March 31, 2018.
