Safety measures sought for trail

Coldstream is proceeding with a pathway on Kidston Road from Coldstream Creek Road to Kidston Elementary

There are calls to amend the design of a Coldstream trail to enhance public safety.

The district is proceeding with a pathway on Kidston Road from Coldstream Creek Road to Kidston Elementary School, but resident John Anderson told council Monday that more needs to be done.

“I’m very worried a kid will be hurt,” said Anderson, who lives along Kidston Road and sees students and teachers regularly walking the route.

The plan is for the pathway to be four-feet-wide but Anderson says it should be similar to the six-feet-wide trail farther up Kidston Road so there is sufficient space for pedestrians and cyclists.

He also wants to see barriers installed to separate pedestrians from vehicles.

Anderson’s concerns were further pursued by Coun. Richard Enns.

“Maybe there should be traffic calming like a crosswalk at Sovereign Park,” he said.

“Maybe it (barriers) is something worth considering.”

Michael Baker, director of infrastructure services, said the pathway will vary in width from four to five feet because excess land is not available in some locations.

“A crosswalk can be added with the line painting program.”

A $362,192 contract for construction of the pathway between Kidston school and Coldstream Creek Road has been awarded to Postill Nixon Earthworks.
