Salvation Army falls short of Christmas campaign goal

"We always have a positive outlook, so things might come in a different way."

Despite falling short of their goal during its Christmas fundraising campaign, the Salvation Army Comox Valley Ministries is looking at the bright side of things.

Dawn Borgen of the Salvation Army said while the campaign saw an increase in volunteers manning the Christmas kettles throughout the Comox Valley, the organization is about $25,000 below its annual goal.

“Our mail-in donations are down, but sometimes they trickle in. We always have a positive outlook, so things might come in a different way.”

Borgen explained what is raised within the Valley during the Christmas campaign is what keeps the organization moving forward throughout the rest of the year. In addition to emergency services, the Salvation Army operates thrift stores (and provides vouchers for those in need to go shopping), a soup kitchen, an emergency food shelter and a variety of programs, life skills and counselling services.

Borgen said donations are always accepted throughout the year, and the organization is always seeking healthy food options for their emergency food shelter. Additionally, volunteers are always needed – not just throughout the kettle season. To donate or for volunteer information, contact the Salvation Army Comox Valley Ministries at 250-338-5133.
