Scams result in over $8k stolen – Ladysmith Police Briefs

There were a total of 61 calls for service over this period of time. To date, 3570 incidents have been reported to the detachment (3765 for the same period in 2010).

There are so many known scams, and new ones are invented every day. Unfortunately, three community members were targeted with several thousand dollars being stolen. I would encourage you to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre web site at www.antifraudcentre.ca in order to recognize scams and prevent yourself from being a victim.

Tuesday, Nov. 1

❱ Sometime between Oct. 29-30, in the early hours, an unknown suspect(s) entered a vehicle and rummaged through it in the 500 block of Ballou.  Nothing was stolen but a work key was twisted and bent.

❱ A complainant called police to report a hit and run that occurred on Oct. 29, 2011, between 10:30-11:30 p.m. The complainant was at a rave that was happening at the end of Spruston Road. When she returned to her vehicle, she found the front bumper cracked and passenger door dented.

Wednesday, Nov. 2

❱ An elderly individual received a call from an unknown person who convinced him to transfer $2000 from a joint bank account in Chemainus via Western Union Bank to a Montreal bank location. The investigation is ongoing.

❱ A road check was conducted on Highway 1 at Spitfire Rd. A total of four notice and orders were issued.

Thursday, Nov. 3

❱ A suspicious female wearing fatigues was walking around and checking out vehicles in the 500 block of 1st Ave. The female was described as being blonde, mid 30’s and approx. 5’8 tall. During foot patrols in the downtown area the female was identified. The call may have well prevented offences from occurring.

❱ An individual was informed by a credit company that her address had been changed from her Ladysmith address to an apartment in Toronto. Her Chase Bank Mastercard had been charged $2000.00 with online Future Shop purchases.

Friday, Nov. 4

❱ Local residents reported that they had been scammed out of $4500. The individuals made a deposit on the sale of a property to a Saskatchewan bank account. The matter is still under investigation.

Sunday, Nov. 6

❱ An assault was reported on Parkhill Terrace. The male had a machete and was later located and arrested. One individual was injured and another threatened. The male was held for court and is facing a three count information. The individual has been remanded and is scheduled to appear in court in December.

Monday, Nov. 7

❱ An employee at the Stu’ate Lelum Secondary School called to report that one of their school vans had been the victim of gas theft. The vehicle was parked in the school parking lot on Jones Road on mid-afternoon on Oct. 5, and the theft was discovered Nov. 7. The culprits committed the theft by cutting the gas line leading to the tank as well as damaging the spigot area.

❱ Two individuals were reported to be illegally in a house in the 10000 block of Willcox Rd. The RCMP attended and two individuals were identified. No charges were recommended at the request of the home owner.
