Scheduled burns in North Okanagan’s Monashee Complex

Residents not to be alarmed if they see additional smoke

  • Aug. 28, 2018 12:00 a.m.

The Regional District of North Okanagan is notifying all residents of scheduled burns to be conducted by BC Wildfire through to Friday, subject to weather conditions.

Controlled burns will take place on both the current Harris Creek and Woodward Creek fires.

Residents should not be alarmed if they see additional smoke arising from these sites.

“The intention of the scheduled burns is to reduce fire fuels between the active fire and the guards so there is no longer a path for the flames to follow,” said Alastair Crick, RDNO’s protective services manager.

These planned ignitions will be monitored closely by BC Wildfire Service crews at all times.

This mix of aerial ignitions and hand ignitions will help enhance the overall safety, efficiency and effectiveness of fire-management efforts. Aerial ignitions will involve helicopters using helitorches to produce the vigorous fire behaviour needed for the current wet conditions. Hand ignitions are performed by BC Wildfire Service firefighters using drip torches.
