Who gets on the bus is still being investigated by the Vernon School District.
The second phase of the bus route reconfiguration plan could be implemented in the spring, and officials warn that could mean fewer routes in some areas.
“Hopefully parents can work together to get children to school safely,” said trustee Mitzi Fortin.
Phase two will look at busing for Alexis Park, Seaton, BX, Harwood, Silver Star, Vernon, Hillview, Beairsto, Kalamalka, Kidston, Coldstream and Lavington schools.
Phase one was implemented in September and it impacted Okanagan Landing, Ellison, Fulton and Mission Hill schools.
“Everything is running smoothly and the kids are getting to school,” said Robyn Stephenson, transportation supervisor.
The walk limit for students is 2.4 kilometres to school or the nearest bus stop.
A third phase is likely in the fall and it will look at J.W. Inglis, Charles Bloom and Cherryville schools.
West Vernon sale confirmed
Disposal of the former West Vernon Elementary is a done deal.
Vernon School District trustees have been told that the sale of the building to the North Okanagan Child Care Society was completed Dec. 15.
The sale price was $1,474,500 less legal fees.
“The funds must go into the capital reserve for the board office renovation as per the sale request to and approval from the Ministry of Education,” said Lewis Hill, secretary-treasurer.
Compost program proposed
Vernon Secondary School wants to go green.
VSS is considering implementing a composting program to reduce school waste, but approval is needed from the Vernon School District to test the material first to see if there are any safety issues for students.
“If the test comes back and there’s a concern, we will have to have a long talk about it,” said Malcolm Reid, principal.
The test will look for micro-biological and metal contamination in any waste.
If composting were to proceed, the end material could be sold locally or used in a proposed community garden.
