The Langley School District Foundation plays a key role in helping ensure students are getting all the help and equipment they need. It takes care of needs which are not funded by the B.C. ministry of education.
Foundation executive director Susan Cairns was in front of the board of education last month to talk about all the books, uniforms, technology and scholarships the foundation was able to hand out last year — $250,000 in total.
She also talked about where the foundation will focus this year.
“Our focus for 2013 is in math, special needs, technology, sports, literacy and dual credit programs,” she said.
The seventh annual Grand Prix gala raised more than $50,000, which purchased 68 Do The Math kits. It also put $20,000 into technology, in things like smartboards to support iPads.
The foundation also put in $20,000 in the fall for sports teams uniforms, novels and musical instruments. The foundation also contributed to building the student-run Fort Langley community gardens.
The foundation has received grants for iPads, an arts studio, to purchase 2,800 new books, help with meal programs and the apprentice program.
It has also fostered a local company wanting to make a difference for students. Online Collision started a playground fund and has already donated a significant amount to make sure Alex Hope Elementary gets a much-needed playground after the school playground was condemned.
Numerous events and several runs are held locally, with proceeds going to the foundation.
