School year begins on Sept. 5

Summerland schools anticipate 1,288 students this year

Public school students in Summerland will be in the classroom beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Wendy Hyer, superintendent of schools at the Okanagan Skaha School District, said schools will be in session for half a day on the first day of the school year before going to full classes the following day.

The Grade 10 curriculum has been changed for this year, while the Grade 11 and 12 curriculums will change for the next school year.

This year, a total of 1,288 students are expected in Summerland’s four public schools, with 445 at Summerland Secondary School, 296 at Summerland Middle School, 381 at Giant’s Head Elementary School and 166 at Trout Creek Elementary School.

Some staff members have changed at the schools this year.

Trevor Robinson will be vice-principal at Summerland Secondary School. New teachers at the high school are Marcus Blair, English; Ben Coughny, French immersion/science;

Andrew Jonas, special education/alternate; Jay Lind, band and Kathleen Spalding, art.

At the middle school, new teachers are Kirsten Arnason, French immersion; Melissa Burdock, French immersion; Karen Finlayson, library; Kylie Holmes, Grade 7; Jay Lind, band and Mark Surzyshen, tech ed.

There are no new teachers at Giant’s Head Elementary School.

At Trout Creek Elementary School, Nicki Carlson will be the Kindergarten teacher.
