Schools spend now to cut power costs

Energy saving means long-term cost saving in local schools..

Langley School District has received some cash to move forward with more than a quarter million dollars in construction projects.

The routine funding from the provincial government includes $126,350 to replace old lights with energy efficient LEDs at five schools

Phase one of the work starts this year and finishes in the spring, with phase two next summer.

The schools are Betty Gilbert and H.D. Stafford Middle schools, and D.W. Poppy, Brookswood, and R.E. Mountain Secondary schools.

In addition, another $149,500 will be spent to improve lighting efficiency at Langley Fine Arts School.

Work will start soon and finish in the spring.

The Langley Fine Arts upgrades are expected to save $21,000 a year in energy costs.

The school district was recently recognized as on of BC Hydro’s top power-smart customers in the educational sector for its energy efficient projects.

BC Hydro has helped the district by subsidizing technical consultants to did energy savings studies and found ways to create greater efficiency.
