Schools in Nelson will not be open on September 2, no matter how negotiations progress this weekend.

In a message posted on the School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) website, Superintendent Jeff Jones said “We remain hopeful that an agreement will soon be reached in the dispute between the BCTF and the Ministry.

“However, even if an agreement is reached over the weekend, we will not be able to open our schools for instruction on Tuesday [September 2] in order to allow time for necessary organization and preparation.

“Therefore, our 2014-2015 school year opening will be delayed.  Please watch the news, and monitor our website for updates regarding a revised schedule for the opening of the 2014-2015 year.”

Negotiations between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the BC Public School Employees’ Association are ongoing.
