Sean McGill named Delta’s new city manager

McGill was chosen by city council to take over the role left vacant by George Harvie in May

Director of corporate services Sean McGill has been named Delta’s new city manager.

McGill’s appointment to city manager comes after current mayor George Harvie’s retirement from the position in May. The job has been empty since then, and filled on a rotating basis by many of the top staffers in the city, including director of parks, recreation and culture Ken Kunz, director of engineering Steven Lan and director of finance Karl Preuss.

After a competition conducted by an external search firm, McGill was chosen by city council to take on the city manager role.

McGill has been a resident of Delta for nearly 50 years, and has worked for the city for the last 29. According to a City of Delta press release, McGill began his career as a labourer and has tackled positions in nearly every city department.

“His history of success at all levels of the organization provides a unique perspective and insight into the challenges of the City of Delta, which will be important in his new role,” the release read, noting that McGill was effective at “creating a positive working environment” in all his positions.

McGill has been director of the corporate services department for the last few years, and has been involved in many issues that have impacted the city.

“Sean McGill has proven over his career with the City of Delta to be an outstanding leader,” Harvie said in the release. “Sean has helped the organization achieve success in several innovative projects and on diverse, complex issues.”

McGill, in his new role of city manager, will be responsible for the overall management of operations at the city. He will also oversee the city’s $328-million budget, and provide guidance to the city’s 1,500 employees.
