The SEAPARC Leisure Complex in Sooke is embarking on its next transformation with a $2.75-million expansion.
The final piece of the funding puzzle came to fruition Friday with the announcement of a $1.24-million grant from the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The balance of $1.5 million is coming from SEAPARC’s reserve funds.
The expansion will provide increased recreational opportunities for Sooke and electoral area residents, said Mike Hicks, Capital Regional District director for the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area.
“We are very appreciative of this grant as it allows us to build this fantastic new facility with no tax increase to our constituents,” he said.

The expansion will address the need for a fitness gym facility and additional multi-purpose space, and enhance the diversity of programs and recreation opportunities the complex offers with its current ice arena, two pools, one multi-purpose room and a meeting room.
SEAPARC also owns and operates a bike park, skate park, baseball diamond and par 3 golf course.
The expansion will increase the 51,020-square-foot footprint of the complex by 10 per cent, or approximately 5,150 square feet. The addition includes a 1,550-square-foot) movement studio and multi-use room and a 3,600-square-foot) fitness gym.
“This investment means an increase in spaces that encourage healthy recreation for residents of the Sooke region, and we are thrilled that SEAPARC has been chosen,” Sooke Mayor Maja Tait said.
Each year, the federal government provides more than $278 million in funding for local government infrastructure across B.C. through the Federal Gas Tax Fund.
The expansion project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2019.
