Search ends after elderly woman found dead near Revelstoke

RCMP have now confirmed that the person found deceased in a crashed vehicle in Glacier National Park on Monday is 86-year-old Barbara Webb, who was the subject of a missing persons investigation.

REVELSTOKE, B.C. – RCMP have now confirmed that the person found deceased in a crashed vehicle in Glacier National Park on Monday is an 86-year-old woman who was last seen in Cranbrook on Friday.

Barbara Webb was the subject of an ongoing missing persons investigation after she left Cranbrook bound for Kelowna early in the morning on Friday, June 17. RCMP began a search for the elderly woman on Monday after she failed to arrive in Kelowna.

RCMP say Webb planned to drive her 2003 black Saturn Ion on a route that took her past Revelstoke on Highway 1.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 20, Parks Canada staff attended the scene of vehicle roll-over on the Trans-Canada near the western boundary of Glacier National Park.

On Monday afternoon RCMP confirmed that the vehicle involved in that incident was Webb’s. “Due to the position of the car, identification of the driver has not been confirmed but is expected in the next few hours,” wrote RCMP spokesperson Insp. B.R. Edmonson in a media release sent out late Monday afternoon. “The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is under investigation by Revelstoke RCMP Traffic Services.”

Early Tuesday morning, RCMP confirmed that Webb was in fact the person in the vehicle. Revelstoke RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate the incident.

No further details are available at this point. Revelstoke RCMP spokespersons were not immediately available for comment Tuesday morning. A Parks Canada spokesperson declined to comment, deferring questions to the RCMP.
