Search for White Rock man leads to Lynn Headwaters

Running shoes believed to belong to a missing White Rock man were found last week near the Lynn Headwaters in North Vancouver.

Running shoes believed to belong to a missing White Rock man have been found near the Lynn Headwaters in North Vancouver.

North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong said Tuesday the runners were found “sometime last week” during an organized search of the area for Hai Tao (David) Liu.

Liu, 43, has not been seen since Dec. 12, when he left his home around 6:30 a.m. to take public transit.

Video footage captured him in a North Vancouver fast-food restaurant around 12:30 p.m. that same day.

“The clothing that was located, we’re alleging that it is his,” De Jong said. “It’s not 100 per cent, but it’s part of the investigation that now looks like he is in that area.”

De Jong said a thorough search of the Lynn Creek area, the falls and surrounding pools of water have been unsuccessful in locating any further clues.

“We… brought in our dive team and involved North Shore Search and Rescue and were unable to locate him,” he said.

“But the water levels are very high and the water is very cold, of course, so it’s still unknown where he is exactly.”

De Jong said police and search officials have not given up on locating Liu safe.

“We always hope for a rescue operation rather than a recovery,” he said.

Liu is five-foot-10, 155 pounds, with short black hair. He was last seen wearing black-framed glasses, a green jacket, blue jeans and yellow-and-white runners.

Anyone with any information that might help locate Liu is asked to call 911, White Rock RCMP (778-593-3600), North Vancouver RCMP (604-985-1311) or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-2477).

“Anything, even insignificant, could help us,” De Jong said.
