Volunteers and family are currently scouring the hills and trails on Promontory Heights following the disappearance of an 79-year-old man with severe Alzheimer’s on Tuesday.
John Pop was last seen at around 4 p.m. in the Teskey/Bridlewood area.
He was wearing blue track pants with white stripes, a brown pullover sweatshirt and house slippers. He typically wears a medical bracelet on his right wrist that has a phone number for his family on it.
Pop is weighs about 200 pounds, stands 5’6″, and has grey hair that’s balding on top.
RCMP and Chilliwack Search and Rescue have been called in to assist with the search.
SAR volunteers were checking in at the command centre Wednesday morning before heading out to search new areas. On the wall was a large map of Promontory, with blue lines marking areas that had already been searched.
Earlier, SAR conducted an aerial search by helicopter,
“If you live, work or play in the Promontory area,” search organizers say, “check your own property along with any security or dash cam footage in your possession.”
Pop does not speak English, and has difficulty with his native Romanian due to medical issues, police say.
Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 604-792-4611. (File number 2019-46811)
The disappearance comes three months after 86-year-old Ethel ‘Grace’ Baranyk, who also suffered severe dementia, went missing.
That search ended tragically after her remains were found not far from her home five weeks later.
