Seatbelt check leads to marijuana seizure

Charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act are being considered against a 24-year-old man after marijuana and related paraphernalia were found in a vehicle on 18 Avenue in South Surrey.

Police say the items were seized around 2:30 p.m. April 10, after an officer on foot patrol near Southmere Crescent – outside the South Surrey RCMP detachment – waved over an older-model Mazda for a seatbelt check.

As the car pulled over, the officer saw the passenger holding what looked like a bag of marijuana, police say. The vehicle also smelled of marijuana.

Two adults – a 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both Surrey residents – were arrested at the scene.

Charges against the woman are not anticipated. The male driver was given a 24-hour suspension and may face charges in connection with the incident.
