Second Chance needs help

Father’s Day will soon be here and it’s a great time to remember the men who are working on their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction

Father’s Day will soon be here and it’s a great time to remember the men who are working on their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction at Second Chance. Items needed include razors, shaving cream, deodorant, shampoo, unscented soap/shower gel and body lotion, as well as new underwear (sizes m-xxl), new or gently used towels and twin bed size comforters.

The Second Chance Recovery House has been helping adult males ages 19 for 24 years. During the past year we saw more than 140 clients. They can stay up to 45 days during which time they learn about boundaries, co-dependency, mindfulness, self-esteem, different kinds of relapse triggers, identifying trauma and behaviours that led to their addictions, anger management and communication skills. They also learn life skills by having to complete daily household chores.

The men are also introduced to the first three steps and first three traditions of the 12-step recovery program. The men are required to attend five out of house AA or NA meetings in the community as well. Monthly guest speakers educate the clients about gambling addiction and Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. The public health nurse comes to group once per month to do Tuberculosis/HIV/Hep C testing, give test results, give flu/Hep A/B shots and screen for sexually transmitted diseases. We help the men attend to their other health problems by connecting them with Mental Health and Substance Use, dentists, liver and diabetes clinics, Laichwiltach Family Life Society, North Island Survivors’ Healing Society and other counsellors.
