Second straight record week for COVID-19 cases in Agassiz-Harrison

29 new cases of COVID-19 breaks last week's record of 23

One week after breaking a record in local case numbers, COVID-19 cases in Agassiz-Harrison continues to rise as the province fights the fourth wave.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control has reported 29 new cases of COVID-19 in Agassiz-Harrison from Sept. 5 to Sept. 11. This comes off of a 23-case spike from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4, which broke a five-month record.

Between the last three days of August and the first 11 days of September, Agassiz-Harrison has recorded a total of 52 cases of COVID-19, more than the May, June, July and the first 28 days of August combined.

Vaccination rates have slowed but continue to tick upward in some demographics. As of Sept. 13, 80 per cent of eligible Agassiz-Harrison residents over the age of 12 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine; of the same age group, 72 per cent are fully vaccinated.

62 per cent of people aged 12 to 17 have received their first dose and 52 per cent have received the second dose. The 18-plus demographic has reached 81 per cent for the first dose and 74 per cent fully vaccinated. 88 per cent of residents aged 50 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. 84 per cent of the 50-plus demographic in Agassiz-Harrison is fully vaccinated.

School has resumed across the province, and thus far there are no reports of local exposure events or outbreaks within SD 78. There are no further outbreaks or public exposures reported.

According to the latest data summary from the BCCDC, a majority of recent cases and hospitalizations across the province continue to be among unvaccinated people. Over the past week, fully vaccinated people accounted for 22 per cent of cases (9 per cent partially vaccinated) and 10 per cent of hospitalizations (6 per cent partially vaccinated). Unvaccinated people accounted for 69 per cent of new cases and 83 per cent of new hospitalizations.

As of publication, there are no further vaccination clinics scheduled for the Agassiz-Harrison area, per Fraser Health. The nearest ongoing vaccination clinic is at the Chilliwack COVID-19 Test and Immunization Centre at 9090 Newman Road in Chilliwack daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Walk-ins are available for first and second doses as capacities and supplies last.
