Secondary-suite fees supported in White Rock

Council approved Bylaw 2009 for first, second and third readings.

The City of White Rock is one step closer to charging a $250 fee to residents who have secondary suites in their homes.

Council unanimously passed first, second and third readings last week on Bylaw 2009, which would establish the fee.

Presented March 25 by the city’s director of financial services, Sandra Kurylo, the proposed bylaw would offset the cost of city services, including infrastructure, incurred as a result of additional demand through tenants of secondary suites.

The $250 fee would be charged annually per secondary suite and is estimated to generate $250,000 a year.

“The funds would be earmarked to be one of the funding sources for major infrastructure improvements,” Kurylo said, adding that Surrey and Abbotsford already have similar fees in place.

The fee can also be prorated for suites which are only occupied for a portion of the year, Kurylo noted.
