Section of highway closed after vehicle hits pole near Qualicum Beach

Traffic disrupted for hours; two people taken to hospital

A vehicle struck a utility pole, causing cables to sag to the ground across the highway approximately 10 kilometres north of Qualicum Beach on Friday morning (Jan. 15).

With the pole slanted and wires dangling dangerously, the section of the road along Highway 19A between Laburnum Road and Goodyear Road had to be closed to traffic for several hours until the damage was repaired.

Oceanside RCMP attended the incident.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman said at 6:23 a.m., a 2019 Honda Civic driven by a 22-year-old man was southbound on Highway 19A when it failed to navigate a sharp corner located at the 5300 block and hit the pole. The driver and a 17-year-old passenger appeared fine on the scene but were transported by ambulance to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation.

RCMP ruled out alcohol or drugs in the incident.
