There’s a major crackdown on vandalism in Lumby.
The Regional District of North Okanagan will spend about $3,500 for a security system at the outdoor pool and the children’s spray park.
“Over the years, we have had regular vandalism,” said Tannis Nelson, community development co-ordinator.
“The system will help deter that situation.”
Most years, the fence around the pool is cut while broken glass is frequently tossed into the water which means the pool has to be closed for half-a-day for cleaning.
And in 2012, a picnic table was destroyed and a replacement cost about $2,000.
The money needed to repair vandalism damage takes away from RDNO’s budget for programs and maintenance.
“If the security system reduces vandalism, we will recover the ($43,500) cost in the first year,” said Nelson.
Specific details about the security system are not being disclosed.
“The system will include recording and there will be monitoring,” said Nelson.
