Southbound traffic on the Island Highway was snarled for several hours after a semi tractor-trailer rig flipped Tuesday morning.
The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. when the truck was rounding the on-ramp from the Duke Point Highway onto the southbound lanes of the Island Highway and rolled on its side, blocking two of the three southbound lanes.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue lieutenant Tom Krall, incident commander, said at the scene the truck’s driver was not injured. Krall did not know why the truck rolled over.
There was no hazardous cargo aboard the truck, but some diesel from one of its fuel tanks spilled onto the roadway.
The Duke Point Highway overpass was closed to vehicles until the wreck was cleared, which meant southbound traffic from the Duke Point ferry terminal had to be rerouted through Cedar to connect with the Island Highway.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
