Ridge Meadows RCMP have announced that a collision on the Haney Bypass near Callaghan Avenue on Aug. 15 has turned into a fatal accident.
Police on Monday said the 74-year-old man who had been riding a motorized scooter has died as a result of injuries suffered in a collision with a pickup truck. The accident happened at about 1 p.m. that day.
It’s the third traffic fatality in Maple Ridge this year and the second involving a pedestrian.
The area was also the site of a motor-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Maple Ridge teen last year. Fifteen-year-old Katelynn Kirkland was killed following a May 2015 collision at the corner of the bypass and Callaghan Avenue.
A 17-year-old Maple Ridge boy has been charged with dangerous driving causing death in connection with that collision.
Maple Ridge council has been pressing the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to improve the Haney Bypass. Better signs and lane markers in the area have already been installed leading up to the Callaghan Avenue intersection.
