The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (Revelstoke) has awarded its second annual Community Literacy Award to the Revelstoke Senior Citizens’ Association.
The award, which was announced on International Literacy Day on Sept. 9, was given to the seniors association in a ceremony on Sept. 21.
“The award acknowledges the efforts the Seniors Association members and their volunteer coordinator to recruit volunteers and successfully provide free computer tutorials,” said CBAL Revelstoke in a statement.
The computer classes helped over 100 seniors learn a variety of computer skills, from beginner-level classes to others that focused on specific computer programs. A total of 12 volunteers led 23 classes.
Revelstoke Community Literacy Coordinator Tracy Spannier also noted that Castle Joe Books was the first business to be nominated for the award. “Castle Joe was nominated for their generous contributions to the love of reading including the free Reading Rug storytimes and donations of excellent quality books to the Share the Word Book Exchange,” Spannier said in a written statement.
