Seniors’ Column

This week's column looks at the new TEETH clinic opening up in the West Kootenays.

The West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic Society stands as a collaborative community endeavour involving the active participation in providing low-cost dental services to eligible persons of all ages whose applications have been reviewed and approved.

This non-profit society has now branched into the Nakusp Regional Disrict as well as nearby areas with the generous support of local professionals representing Saddle Mountain Dental Clinic with Dr. D. DeSandoli.

This society believes that all people deserve access to dental care and endeavours to make quality dental care more affordable to those in need. All community members who seek service are registered as having a net family income less than $30,000 per year (adjusted). A period of three months’ residency is required in order to receive dental services at the Nakusp area dental clinic.

The clinic offers residents without dental insurance (and have an annual income of less then $30,000), a reduction of 40 per cent off dental procedural costs which are noted in the BC Dental Fee guide.

Note also the clinic accepts all governmental plans, including Healthy Kids, private dental plans, persons who receive Income Assistance or Disability Benefits, and various other resources. The TEETH Society, owing to its status as a non-profit organization, relies on donations to help pay for subsidized procedures.

The clinic is able to offer a limited number of payment plans, wherever possible. The duraton of payments can be spread over a maximum of three months’ interest free. Minimum payment of $25 will be due at the first appointment, however the invoice must be paid in full before the next treatments can be scheduled.

There will be a no-show and date cancellation fee of $10 levied, if less than 48 hours’ notice is given that must be paid before another appointment will be booked.

Donations are gladly accepted and a charitable tax receipt can be issued for amounts over $20, upon request.

Service application forms and registrations are available on-line at www.healthco-op.ca and also from volunteers who will be available to provide further information and assistance in completing their applications, beginning Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon at Robertson United Church, Nakusp. The exact dates on the drop-in information service will be open in the weeks ahead, and announced following the degree of response received.

You must bring along your proof of income and residence in order to complete your eligibility assessment. Following this you will be contacted for an appointment time once you have registered.
