Seniors’ Column

This week's column offers advice on what to do if a person needs assistance completing their tax return.

If you need help in completing your tax return, free tax preparation and filing may be available upon application.

You may be eligible if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation. Canada Revenue suggests the following income ceilings will assist in determining eligibility:

family size (one person), total family income set at $30,000.

—one person with one dependant, ($35,000 add $2,500 for each additional dependant.)

—for a couple, the ceiling is $40,000 (add $25,000 for each dependant).

Local volunteers trained by Canada Revenue may be called upon to provide assistance on a free and confidential basis to eligible individuals. This service has been made available to residents of our region for the past fifteen years, and is part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

In general your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from the following sources:

—pension

—employment

—benefits such as disability, CPP, Employment Insurance, CCB or Social Assistance

—support payments

—RRSP

—fellowships, scholarships, grants or bursaries

—interest which totals less than $1,000

Note that the following tax situation is NOT considered simple if you are:

—self-employed or have employment expenses

—have capital gains or losses

—filing for bankruptcy

—completing a tax return on behalf of a deceased person
