The Midway Seniors Centre threw open its doors on Friday for the long-awaited opening of its brand new kitchen.

The Midway Seniors were fortunate enough to get the grant for the centre’s kitchen as a result of the federal New Horizons for Seniors funding program.

The kitchen underwent a complete makeover, including a new dishwater, cabinets, countertop and flooring. The grant for the renovations was over $22,000, the third of which the centre has received for various upgrades, including more energy efficient doors to save on heating. While it wasn’t yet totally complete on Friday—a couple of the cabinet doors had to be returned as they arrived damaged—Lorraine Bradford, Midway Seniors president, said the space was a huge upgrade.

The most notable difference to the space, besides the major change in colour scheme from ‘60s yellow and brown to a fresh grey, is more cabinet space. Bradford said they are in the process of getting the kitchen Food Safe certified, now possible with the addition of the required antibacterial dishwasher. The washrooms were also redone at the same time.

The Seniors are also seeking a fourth grant for next year, bringing the total value of work done on the space to almost $100,000. Hopefully, the next grant will repave and widen the sidewalk to better accommodate seniors with mobility aids.
