Housing options for Lumby seniors are expanding.
Village council has approved a development variance permit for 22 assisted living units at the Monashee Mews complex on Norris Avenue.
“It’s the final thing we need,” said Mayor Kevin Acton, adding that the units would be for residents who need some assistance but not extensive medical care.
“This will help them remain as independent as possible.”
There is currently a 46-bed residential care facility at Monashee Mews.
It’s believed construction on the assisted living units could begin this fall.
Concerns arise over marijuana facilities
Lumby is proceeding with zoning for medicinal marijuana facilities, but concerns abound.
A bylaw amendment only allowing medicinal marijuana to be grown and processed in the industrial zone is being sent to the provincial government for input. The bylaw will then go to a public hearing.
However, Mayor Kevin Acton has reservations about such facilities.
“There has to be some dangers that come with this,” he said of security and crime-related activities.
“How will it be policed and inspected?”
Once the public hearing date is set, Acton hopes residents will provide comments on possibly having a medicinal marijuana facility in the community.
“Having it in homes created significant problems and this plan isn’t well thought out either,” he said of the federal government’s regulations.
