September proclaimed Literacy Month in Port Alberni

Port Alberni City Council has declared September Literacy Month in the Alberni Valley and will fly a “Literacy is Life” flag at city hall.

Port Alberni City Council has declared September Literacy Month in the Alberni Valley and has agreed to fly a “Literacy is Life” flag at city hall that month.

“Literacy Alberni works arduously all year to promote literacy and elevate literacy levels in the community through varied programming both onsite at our literacy centre on Tebo Avenue, and remotely in schools, at events and throughout the region,” executive director Charmead Schella told council Monday night.

Sept. 23 is Raise-A-Reader day across Canada, a coordinated effort to raise funds for literacy programs. Literacy Alberni has participated in this program for nine years, Schella said. “Raise-A-Reader is Literacy Alberni’s biggest and most important fundraising effort of the year.”

Volunteers in Port Alberni will be wearing bright orange T-shirts and at various locations handing out newspaper sections about literacy issues and programs in the region.
