Severe thunderstorm watch for Shuswap updated

Environment Canada calls for a chance of showers or thunderstorms this morning and a risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

Yesterday’s severe thunderstorm watch may have been a false alarm for Salmon Arm, but Environment Canada says thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Southern Interior today and there is the potential for some of these storms to become severe.

As of 7:30 this morning, thunderstorms were already active in the Creston area.

The main concern is heavy downpours, however large hail and strong winds gusts are also possible. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Environment Canada also issues a warning to people who are outdoors as lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”
