A local deputy sheriff celebrated the end of her career by adding some gold and silver to her wall of achievements.
Shauna Quigley could routinely be seen at the Vernon and Kelowna courthouses over the past 23 years, since starting her career in the RCMP in 1981.
The retired deputy sheriff, who lives in Vernon, recently put her skills to action at the World Police and Fire Games held in Fairfax, Virginia. There she won a gold and three silver medals in individual swimming events as well as a silver in women’s relay.
“Her gold medal was won on July 1, which in addition to being Canada Day was also her first day of retirement,” said proud husband Dan Quigley.
The WPFG are a friendly competition open to active and retired peace officers and firemen from around the world, attracting approximately 12,000 competitors.
“She decided to participate in the WPFG because of the camaraderie between fellow peace officers and firefighters from around the world,” said Dan.
“She has always enjoyed swimming and found it to be relaxing from the stressors of the job.”
The local couple did attend the last Games held two years ago in Belfast, where Shauna managed a couple of fourth place finishes.
This year she ramped it up, and with some pointers from a local swim coach, she made it to the podium.
Following her first post in Prince Rupert, Shauna has been in Chase, Ottawa and Kelowna. During her time in Ottawa she was on the world famous RCMP Musical Ride, where she performed at Expo ‘86 in Vancouver,
Now the couple, who have two grown daughters, plan to take it easy and retire in the Kootenays.
