Street corners and intersections throughout the Town of Princeton are getting some cosmetic improvement.
Call them signs of the times.
Over the next three to four years all the street signs in town will be replaced.
“A lot of signs in the town are in pretty rough shape,” said infrastructure director Jamie Umpleby. “A lot of them are missing and they are in different styles and different colors.”
The signs are priced at $31 each, and the cost of the initiative is being taken from a traffic street sign repair budget – which is set at $7,000 for 2019.
Approximately 100 signs will be replaced each year until the town is covered, said Umpleby, at a cost of $3,100 annually.
The new signs were unveiled at Monday night’s council meeting. Councillors voted to approve white lettering on a dark background – as it was suggested these signs would be easier to see at night – with some modifications to staff recommendations.
The original design included the Town of Princeton logo on every sign, however councillor George Elliott suggested that be removed and replaced by block numbers that could assist emergency services.
“I actually discussed this matter with a first responder yesterday,” said Elliott. “As much as I like the Town of Princeton logo I don’t think it’s going to be very visible on those signs and I would rather see 100, 200 300 Block, thinking primarily of first responders.”
A resolution to approve the signs was amended to incorporate that change.
