Tourists shouldn’t have any trouble finding Salmon Arm’s downtown this summer, if the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is true to its word.
At the June 8 meeting of the Downtown Salmon Arm board, frustration prompted members to consider taking things into their own hands.
“We’ve been at this for years. I think we should be putting our own signs up,” said director Bill Laird, referring to highway signs that would direct motorists to the downtown. “This is ridiculous, disrespectful. These people rely on us, that’s where they get their wages from. Let’s just get a price on our own signs and put them up.”
He added that the ministry’s delays will mean Salmon Arm will go another summer without the signs.
However, the province finally appears to be acting. Jeff Knight, ministry spokesperson, told the Observer Monday that the signs are “in production” and “they will be installed within the month.”
Asked if that’s for certain, he said “yes.”
The signs will say, ‘Downtown, next four exits.’
